Stop Posting About How Many Auditions You Had This Week
If the title of this blog post triggered you, we challenge you to keep reading.
To set the record straight...YES, it's great to be excited and thankful about auditions, we are in no way trying to dim that joy. But what we are always trying to help our community do is make smart choices like the CEO of an acting career would.
We see these "I had so many auditions this week" posts a LOT.
Most of the time when we see these types of posts from actors, it's a photo of them in their taping studio, or a screen grab from one (or multiple) auditions with a caption or text bubble along the lines of, "Soooo exhausted from the 8 auditions I had this weekend." or "So THANKFUL for these 10 auditions that my agent sent me this week! Working hard, wish me luck!"
Here's why you should stop posting about how many auditions you have on social media:
It doesn't offer anything of value to your audience (It's all "me, me, me!"). Some folks who know and love you might be interested in this type of content, but otherwise there's no benefit to your followers.
It can very easily come across as bragging or "validation seeking". Trust me, we get the rollercoaster of emotions we all go through in this career. But posting to prove something or warp perceptions for yourself or others is not a great career strategy.
...and it's a little tacky. It just is. The tough part about this is that many actors have good intentions and don't realize how these posts come across, or are struggling with their own troubles (i.e. trying to prove to unsupportive family/friends that they can really make it as an actor).
But, unless you identify your personal brand as being tacky...for most actors, this is three-strikes-you're-out type of post misstep (yes, even if you had the BEST of intentions).
Why? Because social media is a TOOL for our acting careers. And whether we are being intentional or not with it, it WILL impact how people view you, your personal brand, and whether they want to work with you or not.
This is why my personal marketing mantra is "every post must have a purpose". And this is why it is SO important to approach social media with a strategy. We got your backs, boos! Don't be that person, and instead focus on:
Building a genuine community - after all, social media is meant to be SOCIAL! (Plus, when we focus on connecting for real with others we tend to feel less self-conscious).
Creating content that provides value and that your people will love and connect with.
Creating content that SHOWS your talent, not just you talking about it.
