Ever feel like you’re constantly second-guessing the progress you’ve made in your career? Or kick yourself when you see other folks in the entertainment industry making big strides and wondering why you haven’t been working harder? This is the subject we tackle in Episode 7 of the It’s a Slate of Mind Podcast!
Beating Insecurities and Comparison in Your Career
It can be really easy to fall into the comparison game and let anxiety and insecurities sneak into your mind and heart- especially in an industry that’s so visually driven. I’ve found that social media can be a huge negative in this regard, as nearly any other actor or entertainment professional’s public life is just a click away on your phone. In these moments, I like to reference the quote, “Comparison is the thief of joy”. Let me tell you, that is SO true!
Nothing positive or uplifting ever comes from spending your time comparing your life or career to another actor’s. Even more so, the time you’re wasting thinking about them could be much better invested in your own to-do list. As cheesy as it sounds, when it comes to life as an actor, staying in your own lane and working hard there is the absolute best and most necessary place to be. Though each of us posses unique qualities and our paths will all look different, there are a few key things that every actor needs to have and continually update to stay on track – and that is what we cover in this episode of the podcast!
6 Things Every Actor Must Have to Stay on Track
- Consistent training
- Market-appropriate, typecast-accurate, current headshots
- Strong work ethic
- An open mind & teachable spirit
- A work-life balance, and heavy dose of self-care
- An understanding of the market
Here’s the thing. There’s no magic formula to “making it”. Everyone’s path is different and will require different combinations of efforts to make it work. But! The items listed above are necessary for every actor to stay current and on track in their lives and careers. We dig into these items in detail in the podcast episode!
This Week’s Guest: Teisha Speight
In episode 7 of the “It’s a Slate of Mind” podcast I chat with my guest Teisha Speight about what “staying on track” actually does and does not look like for actors. We cover everything from headshots, to the importance of training. And dive deep into sensitive struggles many actor’s face on this journey including practicing kindness, and why so many of us struggle with judging ourselves regarding our careers. This podcast episode also includes personal stories about how we let go of the things we can’t control and focus on the right projects to move our acting careers forward. You’ll definitely be able to relate to at least one of the points we touch on in this episode.
